Birth Cellar - lyrics

A young woman spins organs from a wheel that rests inside her heart. Flat veins coil onto the trembling spool as she works the treadle in her breastrising and falling. Suddenly, a faint musk of wood shavings hems the room. The woman shivers and slumps onto her swollen belly. Something falls from underneath her gown. Something falls and crumples on the floor. A shadow passes over her sunken face, as fresh curds of skin stir the puddle growing on the flagstone. The wheel jerks and spins in the opposite direction, unraveling veins from the quiet sore between her legs. They fold and coil on the cellar floor, and sink into the grey yolktwitching. Breathing in darkness and cold beneath the gown. Gathering feathers and blood from off the stone, the feet, the tether. It shudders and limps towards the cellar stairs. Then it turns to the woman and screams, Mother! Mother! but the woman does not lift her fallen head. Outside the river splits its beaten hide. Foam gathers on the pebbled bank.
