Estuary - lyrics

All night I stare into the river's skin pocked with rain, and smell the burnt leather of grandfather's belt around my waist. The sunken scars on my arms cradle the rain before it falls and trickles down my heron leg. Mother, I can't sleep through the night for thinking about Grandfather's hide, covering you. I limp across the field, past the bathtub and the cutting stump, then drag the oven door from the thorns behind the house. I cross the threshold and find you by the empty hearth, dreaming. His wood figurines lay at your side. I raise my arms up into the air, and bash the rusted metal on your head. I drag you to the sunken bathtub, then drop your gown into the river. Shivering and thin, I crawl in behind you and feel your warmth against my skin. Mother, my heart is flooding my bones and I can't hear anything, but pounding in me.
