Grandfather's Hide - lyrics
After grandfather burned, you dragged your mattress in front of the hearth and stared in silence. Why could you never leave the fire? Every summer day I brought you fresh berries from behind the house. All winter I brought you firewood. Last night I rose from the cold cellar floor to stoke your precious fire, but there was no more wood under the eaves. I sat beside you and stroked your matted hair while you dreamed of flying again. I watched branches swaying outside the window, then I crawled under grandfathers hide to feel your spider leg hair against my own. Why did you shiver and push me away into the night? I waited for you on the cold pebbled bank. I waited until my eyes felt like stones. I waited, but you wouldnt leave dead grandfathers heart. I unbuckle his belt and wrap it around your throat. Your eyelids flicker like the wings of a dragonfly. The river spreads like a gown across the field. Rain beats against my neck as I haul you from the bathtub and drag you back to the house. |
