Sparrow - lyrics
Grazing its pale belly along a jag, a young sparrow flies through the broken window and crashes into a heap of charred figurines lying in the stone fire place. A woodbug climbs a wet mattress slumped over a woven rug. A cracked beak opens and closes. A claw scrapes along the fire-blackened stone. Bleeding through its feathers, the sparrow shivers in the heat of the dying embers. A cedar bough lies in twinkling shards of glass. A patch of sun crawls over the mattress. Smoke lingers in the wet fabric. A belt lays on the floor. Hovering and landing, flies quiver in the heat of the falling sun. A fevered boy rocks himself in a dead womans arms, and he whispers to the sparrow as it hardens to the cooling stone. Its fallen shadow grows. A wolf spider emerges from a crack in the mortar. The eyes: dabs of red. The body: grey as haggard stitches. It paces the ashes then mounts the stiffened feathers. A glossy eye leans towards the final thread of light. A rusty spring clicks. The boy moans. The spider rushes towards the mattress. |
